My Main Computer I bought in 2023
I have purchased a PC and will show you what and why I selected it. I am an infrastructure engineer in Japan and should be familiar with it.
(I am writing the price for your reference, but I buy it when it is the cheapest. Some of my purchases are made a few years ago when prices were lower.)
About my computer
I chose a small, high-performance desktop computer as our main computer.
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 6800H(8 cores, 16 Threads, 3.2–4.7GHz)
- Memory: 32GB (DDR5)
- HDD: 500GB NVMe and 4TB SSD
- Network: 2.5 Gbps
- WiFi 6 (2.4Gbps)
- HDMI: x2 (4K: 3840*2160)
- Dimension: 4.96x4.44x1.65 in (126x113x42mm)
This is Beelink Mini PC SER6 PRO 6800H and SSD.
Price
Price is important. It is considerably cheaper than a standard computer.
- Computer: 79,781 JPY = 796 USD at Aliexpress
- SSD 4TB: 29,724 JPY = 212 USD at amazon.co.jp
Which OS, Windows or Mac, or Linux
I use three operating systems. At home it is Windows. At work, I use Mac and a Linux desktop as a bastion desktop server. The operating system is the most important aspect of buying a computer. We selected Windows for the following reasons.
- You can use old software all the time.
- Some software is only supported on Windows.
- You can choose the hardware of your choice.
- If you buy a new computer and no longer need it, you can install Linux.
Desktop Computer or Laptop Computer
I chose the desktop because I don’t carry it with me and always work at my desk.
Dimension of Desktop Computer
Dimension is very important. I chose the smallest desktop possible.
4.96x4.44x1.65 in (126x113x42mm)
Which HDD
For OS: 500GB NVMe
This is the disk that came with my computer. 500 GB is the best size for the OS. If it were 250GB it would be a little small for many years of use.
For Data: 4TB SSD
I have added a disk for data. The cheaper 2TB would have been fine, but for the future, I chose the 4TB, even if it was a little more expensive.
Which Memory
My choice is 32GB (DDR5)
I have no problem with 16GB now, but I chose 32GB for the future. I am an IT engineer, so I run multiple operating systems on this computer.
Which CPU
My choice is AMD Ryzen 7 6800H(8 cores, 16 Threads, 3.2–4.7GHz)
A fast CPU is always better, but it is not very important to me. CPUs with higher performance are more expensive, so I choose based on performance and price.
Right now, it is Intel Core i7–6700T@2.80GHz, 4 Cores, 8 Logical Processors, but sometimes the load is a little high, but there are no major pr.
Network Adaptor
My choice is 2.5 Gbps
Normal 1 Gbps is fine.
What I already have
Monitor:
- 27 Inch, Dell S2722DC
(28,296 JPY = 202 USD) - HDMI x 2
- USB Type C x 1
I like the ability to change the height of the monitor. Cheaper monitors do not allow you to change the height.
Keyboard:
- Keychron C1
- Windows, mac
- TKL(Ten-Key-Less)
- Mechanical Keyboard (Red)
- Wired
After all, mechanical keyboards are easy to type on. I use the lightest red shaft to avoid hand fatigue. And I use the cable type so that I don’t have to worry about running out of batteries.
And this keyboard is compatible with both Windows and Mac. There is a physical switch to switch between Windows mode and Mac mode. Key tops can be changed.
Mouse
- Trackball Mouse
- Logitech M575S
- 4319 JPY = 30 USD
